During a spring tour of California AAUP chapters and affiliates, AAUP president Cary Nelson joined the California Faculty Association (CFA) in its fight to restore the budget for California State University. He delivered a keynote speech to the CFA Delegates' Assembly in which he addressed the challenges and threats that budget crises raise for academic freedom, tenure, and job security.
Then Nelson joined CFA president Lilian Taiz and other members of the “Alliance for the CSU” in phone banking (Taiz and Nelson are pictured above). They made calls to encourage Californians to join the alliance and support CFA’s fight against $386 million in cuts proposedby California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The cuts to the university are part of more than $1 billion in proposed reductions of state funding for higher education in California. The governor will present a revised budget in mid-May. (5/7/08)
