AAUP chapters that engage in collective bargaining at private colleges and universities need to understand their obligations under the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA). This federal law, also called the Landrum-Griffin Act, promotes democratic and responsible practices in union internal operations. The LMRDA addresses topics including: union elections, financial conflicts of interest, and bonding for individuals who handle union money. It also requires certain reports to be filed with the U.S. Department of Labor, which administers the Act. Sources of advice about the LMRDA include your chapter attorney and the Department of Labor. National AAUP can also be consulted for assistance. Visit the Department of Labor website at http://www.dol.gov/esa/olms_org.htm.
