The AAUP's annual governance conference, developed this year in collaboration with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics, brought together faculty members and administrators to explore the special challenges they encounter when they work collaboratively. The first day of this year's conference, convened at NCAA headquarters, devoted to collegiate athletics; the following two days continued the athletics theme and expanded to include more general issues of the faculty role in shared decision making.

It seems as if everybody is talking about liberal education—about its definition, about its uses and about its social relevancy. Those speaking with the loudest voices, however, have often been outside the academy—particularly legislators and corporate leaders. Often they are the very people who would take the place of faculty in determining the parameters of higher education. It is time now for the faculty who go into the classroom every day to be heard. This year's annual meeting focused on the faculty's response to ultimate questions about what we do as educators.

The conference created a forum in which professors and administrators shared their views and experiences about academic freedom in a faith-based environment. Ex corde ecclesiae and its implementation at Catholic colleges and universities was also special focus. Featured speakers at the conference included Stanton L. Jones, Provost and Professor of Psychology at Wheaton College, Lee Hardy, Professor of Philosophy at Calvin College, and Monika Hellwig, Executive Director of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities.

The meeting included addresses by Marc Lendler, assistant professor of government at Smith College and one of the former Bennington College plaintiffs; Virginia Valian, author of Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women; and Douglas Foard, executive secretary of the Phi Beta Kappa Society.
