Legal Internships and Externships

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is seeking qualified interns or externs for the 2011-2012 academic year as well as for the Summer of 2012.  The AAUP is a national organization founded in 1915 that is active in areas including intellectual freedom, due process, professional ethics, and university governance.  Membership is about 46,000 faculty members and scholars from all disciplines.

The intern and extern positions will be in a legal department currently staffed with 2 lawyers and 1 paralegal and involves significant in-house legal and other support work for the Association. The legal office files amicus briefs in higher education cases of national significance, provides legal information on a wide range of issues to staff and members all over the country, and acts as a resource on higher education issues.  Staff and volunteer lawyers are experts in such areas as academic freedom, discrimination, affirmative action, intellectual property, and employment.  Interns and externs can expect to be asked to research and write on a variety of legal issues including First Amendment, higher education, collective bargaining, election, tax, labor, personnel, financial, and contract issues.

Past legal interns have helped research and write amicus briefs in the federal court system, updated a multi-state survey on faculty handbooks as employment contracts, and researched and written legal outlines and fact sheets on topics such as “Faculty and Defamation Suits,” “Faculty and Family Leave Issues,” and “Academic Freedom and the First Amendment.”

Externs should be in their 2nd or 3rd year of law school and be available to work approximately 15 hours per week.  Summer internships are available to students who have completed their 2nd year of law school.  AAUP legal staff will work with interested applicants to arrange for public interest stipends, academic credit or pro bono credit from their law schools.

Department of Organizing and Services- Campaign Organizer (New Mexico)

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is pleased to announce a temporary Campaign Organizer position, a position which will be filled as soon as possible.    This position offers a unique opportunity to play a leadership role in a higher education organizing campaign. The Campaign Organizer will work at the direction of AAUP’s Organizing Director and the Senior Program Officers assigned to our New Mexico campaigns.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate and perform the day-to-day work of the AAUP’s external organizing campaigns in New Mexico.  
  2. Identify, recruit, and develop department leaders.  
  3. Develop organizing committee member individual skills through accompanying them on office visits, giving them feedback, and modeling excellent organizing skills. 
  4. Support committee in developing meeting agendas and making effective turnout plans for events.
  5. Help develop and run training sessions for newly recruited committee members.
  6. Identify on-going training needs of organizing committee and help to develop and lead trainings.
  7. On a daily basis, work extensively in the field, including office visits. 
  8. Work with part-time staff to manage the database and generate daily and weekly reports. 
  9. Help develop the campaign plan by identifying new challenges and working collaboratively on solutions.
  10. Coordinate field work on a daily basis with the campaign director and senior program officers.

Qualifications

  1. Two or more years experience in external union organizing.  Demonstrated skill in organizing all phases of an external campaign—from leadership identification and committee recruitment to getting out the vote.
  2. Experience and demonstrated skill in working with professional groups and individuals.
  3. Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to deliver on short-term and long-term campaign goals.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience organizing faculty in higher education.  
  2. Experience teaching in higher education.  Advanced degree desirable.
  3. Proficient in Microsoft Office/Word, Excel, and databases.

Department of Organizing and Services - Part-Time Database Manager (New Mexico)

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) seeks applications for a part-time Database Manager to work in Las Cruces, New Mexico.  The Database manager will play a key role on the AAUP’s organizing team by designing and administering a basic database to track the progress of a faculty union drive at New Mexico State University. The Database manager will work closely with the Campaign Organizer and other AAUP staff to organize and present information in the most useful way for the campaign. The Database Manager will be an important resource for identifying campaign goals and for training other members of the organizing team to use the database. This is a part-time position that runs from January 9th-May 2nd. Average workload will not be more than 20 hours per week.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Designing and updating a database to track contacts, notes, and other information for thousands of records

  2. Generating regular, detailed reports from the database
  3. Entering new data from forms provided by the Campaign Organizer
  4. Attending regular organizing committee meetings

Qualifications

  1. Experience and demonstrated skill in working with professional groups and individuals
  2. Excellent time-management skills and keen attention to detail
  3. Ability to complete weekly tasks regularly and reliably
  4. Outstanding written and oral communications skills
  5. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Advanced quantitative or computer skills

  2. Advanced degree
  3. Commitment to academic freedom, faculty rights, and social justice

Compensation

  • Salary: a total of $5,000 to be paid out in bi-monthly portions from January to May
