Biography
Martin Snyder holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola College in Maryland (1963) and master's and doctoral degrees from the Catholic University of America (1966, 1969). He has had additional educational experience as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Muenster (Germany, 1963–64) and as a participant in the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management (1992). Snyder began his teaching career as an instructor in classics at the Catholic University of America, and thereafter served for nineteen years as assistant, associate and finally professor of classics at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. He left Duquesne in 1988 to accept the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut. In 1990 he was named Provost of Saint Joseph College (West Hartford, Connecticut), a position he held until 1996. From 1996 to 1999 he served as President of Molloy College in Rockville Centre, New York.
Snyder joined the national staff of the American Association of University Professors in July 1999 as Associate Secretary and Director for Academic Freedom and Professional Standards. He now serves as Director of External Relations. In June 2011, Council appointed Snyder Senior Associate General Secretary with responsibilities for managing the day-to-day operations of the national office. Snyder has been a frequent contributor to Academe.
