Capitol Hill Day is the AAUP’s annual grassroots lobbying event, and your opportunity to use your expertise and passion to advocate for higher education! Members come together from across the country to visit their senators and representatives in Washington, D.C. and speak up about the issues that matter most to us in academia.
New to this event, or to lobbying? No problem. The national staff and your conference leaders have everything you need to prepare and present your message persuasively.
Briefing materials on this year’s themes and leave-behinds for your visits will be on the AAUP website well in advance of June 12, and you can contact Nicole Byrd, government relations associate, anytime or call (202) 737-5900.
To make an appointment to see your senators and representative on June 12, call the congressional switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to make an appointment for a time between 10 AM and 4 PM. Coordinate with your in-state colleagues when planning meetings for a unified message and to strengthen the relationships in your state conference.
Later that day, gather on the Hill for our annual congressional reception honoring this year's recipient of the Henry T. Yost Award for Congressional Leadership. The Yost Award is given to the senator or representative who has made the greatest contribution to higher education in the past year. The recipient for 2007 was Senator Jack Reed, the worthy successor to Senator Claiborne Pell’s seat.
Special event: a networking meeting for AAUP members involved in government relations work at the state level. Come and meet with your colleagues to trade tips and experiences, and collaborate on projects to keep in contact with each other and with the GR staff from the national office.
